Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach "Valeria" pitcher

This beautiful Villeroy & Boch "Valeria" wash pitcher is roughly 120 years old. This model and its accompanying pattern date back to the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) period.

The back of the pitcher features the Roman god Mercury (the god of commerce). Villeroy & Boch used this logo at their factory in Mettlach, Germany, between 1874 and 1909. A close inspection of the clay reveals an impressed number "4," indicating the pitcher was made in 1904, making it well over 120 years old.

The crazing and patina on the pitcher reflect its age; these characteristics are typical of such an antique piece and, rather than detracting from its beauty, make it all the more special. If using it for flowers, it is advisable to use an insert vase to prevent damage to this little gem. However, it is a magnificent piece even without flowers!
